The Apple CartA power struggle between the king and his prime minister triggers a full-blown constitutional crisis. Fiendishly plotted, with much to say about the true nature of power, this brilliant satire was one of the biggest hits of Bernard Shaw’s career.

LUNCHTIME ONE-ACT
On a cruise ship, an anti-social writer (‘A’) becomes acquainted, quite unwillingly, with a sparky young woman (‘Z’). The two of them have nothing in common: not their class, not their experience, not their outlook. So of course it is a love story. With six actors for two parts, the casting of A and Z will be as unpredictable as love itself.
Recommended for Grade 9+ | Age 14+
By Bernard Shaw

Directed by Selma Dimitrijevic
Set and costumes designed by Beyata Hackborn
Lighting designed by Nick Andison
Original music and sound designed by John Gzowski
Movement by Alexis Milligan

Cyrano De Bergerac The return of our 2019 smash hit! Cyrano de Bergerac is a swashbuckling 17th century swordsman who can do anything … except tell Roxane, the woman he loves, how he feels. He’s just too self-conscious about his unusually large nose. Roxane is in love with words, so when Cyrano is offered the chance to ghost-write love letters to her from an inarticulate, love-struck cadet, he takes it — but can he ever reveal himself? A breathtaking tale about the exquisite torture of loving from afar, for anyone who has ever stood beneath a window.

GaslightBella Manningham thinks she’s losing her mind. In the evenings, she hears strange sounds and the gas lights dim for no apparent reason. But is she losing her grip on reason, or is it being loosened for her? Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play gave us the word we now use for an insidious form of mental abuse. This new adaptation from Johnna Wright and Shaw’s own Patty Jamieson is a gripping thriller: will the gaslight have its intended, murderous, effect?

Too True To Be Good How to describe a play in which the first character to speak is a microbe? Shaw’s ‘Political Extravaganza,’ written in 1932, foreshadows the insanity that was about to engulf the world. With a cavalier disregard for the unities of time and place, the play takes us on a surreal journey into the heart of the outdated public and private prejudices and errors that would soon be swept away – or would they?

EverybodyWe are proud to present the Canadian premiere of a modern morality play from BJJ, author of An Octoroon. Based on its medieval original, Everyman, the play has a simple plot: Death comes to Everybody. Time is up. Can I, asks Everybody, bring someone to keep me company? Sure, if anyone will come. So then, the question is, who will stay with Everybody to the end? Beauty? Family? Stuff? Be ready to laugh and weep at this remarkable, heartfelt updating. Mature content.

It sounds simple enough, but things are more complicated in Rabindranath Tagore’s one-act play based on a story from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. Chitra, a warrior princess raised as a boy, begs the gods for perfect beauty so she can win the affections of Arjuna. An enchanting poem of false appearance and true love.

Gem of The OceanHow can we ever come to terms with the crimes of the past? Aunt Ester, the 285-year-old “washer of souls” at the centre of this poetic masterpiece, has an answer. When a young man who is  drowning in guilt comes to her door, she sends him on a quest to find the mythical City of Bones. His spiritual journey through history takes place against the backdrop of very real events in the 1904 Pittsburgh of the play. This is the first in August Wilson’s THE AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE, his legendary ten-play cycle on the African-American experience in the 20th century.
