Colours for Indigenous Communities

RED – Represents fire, Violence, Energy, and blood. Faith, Beauty, Happiness,

Meaning: A power found in places of importance to the Aborigines. Red colour symbolizes violence, war, blood, wounds, strength, energy, power and success in war paint, but can also represent happiness and beauty in face paint.

 

YELLOW – Grouped with ORANGE – Intellect and Determination

Meaning:  Represents Water The makings on the back of great snake ancestors are associated with yellow. Willingness to fight to the death. Symbolozied the color of death, but also represented heroism and a good life lived.

 

BLUE – Wisdom and intuition, Confidence

Meaning: Represented the sky, rivers lakes and water.

 

GREEN – Nature, Harmony, Healing, and Endurance

Meaning: Symbolized endurance. Associated with harmony and is a great healing power believed to improve vision. Green is associated with nature, especially, plants, hills, mountains, earth, summer, and rain.

 

WHITE – Sharing, Purity, Light and mourning

Meaning: White is associated with the stars and sky that is filled with the aborigines ancestors who returned to the sky after creating the earth. Symbolised mourning but also peace and happiness. Used to represent winter and snow

 

PURPLE – A sacred color and symbolised power, mystery, and magic

 

BLACK – Earth, Victory, Success, Power, Aggression and strength

Meaning: Represents the earth, making campfires of the dreamtime ancestors. Perceived as a “living” colour and worn on the face to prepare for war as shown in the above picture. Black is a very aggressive colour. Black meant strength.
